At IPRS Group, we take pride in joining the global celebration of Black History Month. This month is a powerful opportunity to honour the rich history, remarkable contributions, and enduring legacy of Black communities across the world.
This year, we focus on the theme “Reclaiming Narratives,” which highlights the importance of Black communities taking ownership of their stories, culture, and heritage.
It reminds us that true empowerment comes from being the custodians of our own history, allowing diverse voices to lead the way in shaping how Black identities and experiences are shared and understood.
Throughout October, we have invited all our colleagues to reflect on this important theme so that together, we can listen, learn, and support the reclamation of these vital narratives.
The Importance of Black History Month – Our Colleagues Personal Stories
Munya Zowa, our PFAS Head of HAAS Operations, spoke to us personally to share what Black History Month means to him.
Q: Why is Black History Month important to you?
A: Black History Month is important to me because it serves as a vital opportunity to celebrate, recognise, and reflect on the contributions, achievements, and history of Black people. It’s a time to honour the often-overlooked accomplishments of Black individuals who have shaped society, culture, and history—both here in the UK and globally. For me personally, it’s also a chance to learn more about and appreciate the rich heritage and resilience of the Black community, which is often underrepresented in mainstream narratives.
Q: What significance does Black History Month have in the UK specifically?
A: In the UK, Black History Month holds special significance because it sheds light on the essential role that Black people have played in the country’s history, despite the systemic challenges and discrimination they’ve faced. From the Windrush Generation, who helped rebuild the country after World War II, to influential figures in politics, the arts, sports, and sciences, Black individuals have been integral to shaping modern Britain. This month encourages us to acknowledge that legacy and address the exclusion of these stories from conventional historical narratives.
Q: What do you think Black History Month brings to wider conversations around diversity and inclusion?
A: Black History Month provides a crucial platform for addressing ongoing issues of racial inequality and injustice. It sparks important conversations around diversity, inclusion, and the need for greater representation of Black voices in all sectors of society. By celebrating Black History Month, we educate people, combat harmful stereotypes, and foster a sense of pride and belonging within the Black community. It’s a time to reflect on where we are and how far we still need to go.
Q: How does Black History Month inspire you personally?
A: For me, Black History Month is more than just a celebration—it’s a powerful reminder of the strength, perseverance, and creativity of Black people throughout history. It allows us to reflect on the past, recognise the progress made in the present, and inspire future generations to continue striving for equality and justice. By acknowledging Black history as an integral part of British history, we help build a more inclusive, diverse, and united society. That, to me, is truly inspiring.
Thank you for taking the time to read and reflect on the importance of Black History Month with us, look out for more stories throughout the month.
