In this edition of Why I Work for PFAS, we’re shining a spotlight on Sophia O’Nians, Unit Coordinator, who shares her experience of working at PFAS and what makes the organisation a rewarding and supportive place to grow.

From strong teamwork to meaningful work and genuine support, Sophia’s perspective reflects what many of our colleagues value most about being part of PFAS.

Here’s what she had to say:

Please introduce yourself! 

“Hi, my name is my name is Sophia. I’m a unit coordinator and I joined in 2024.” 

Why did you join PFAS? 

“I joined PFAS because I have always worked with vulnerable people from when I was about 12 to 14, I was looking after kids with disabilities or I was nannying. And then I studied psychology and sort of went into that sector. I found the hours to be very long. It’d be very stressful and strenuous that I kind of needed a bit more rhythm about my day, a bit more stability.

And I enjoyed working more to targets! So I kind of wanted to transition my skills away from things that were actively negating against my well-being and start moving something that’s more structured, more supportive to me as a person, but where I still get to, a little bit or as much as I can, work with people.” 

PFAS Values are Wellbeing, Integrity & Teamwork, which one resonates most with you?

“The value of well-being will always resonate with me, most importantly. But I think to have well-being, then it’s definitely teamwork, especially where there are such dynamic roles, such diverse roles and remote working to bring people together. And a team takes work, it takes effort and it takes putting yourself out of your comfort zone.

And I think in every aspect of life you need some teamwork and you need some unity between you. So I think that’s definitely the most important value because it doesn’t just apply to work, it applies to absolutely everywhere in life.” 

What is your Top Tip for joining PFAS? 

“My piece of advice for anyone coming into the business would definitely be adaptable to change! Things change all the time, but that makes it exciting. That makes it interesting. That and put yourself out there, have some confidence to reach out to the people that all you see is their name on a team’s chat. But they could also be people that change your life. You can make some friends. Like I’ve made some friends where I’ve never even spoke to them on video call and we message. I’d probably say confidence, adaptability and positivity. We’re a very positive company!”
